He was predeceased by: his parents, Gerald Metzger and Anna Hammann Metzger; his former wife C. Edith Byrd; his spouse Shirley Van Auken; his daughter Cheryl Hartman; his brother Robert Metzger; and his stepdaughters, Gayla Boyd and Melody Counce.
He is survived by: his children, Richard'Rick' Metzger (Sherry) of Muscatine, Judy Metzger of Muscatine and Karen Bixby (Mark) of Muscatine; and his stepdaughters, Peggy Hoback (Jon) of Columbus Junction and Sheila Lukins (Mark) of Washington. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.
