He was predeceased by: his parents, Orlin Dale and Gerri Sams (Chumbley); his wife Clarice Sams (Klootwyk); his parents-in-law, Clarence and Grace Klootwyk; his son Ronald Wayne Sams; his granddaughter Elizabeth Rhoads; and his brother-in-law Bethel Van Klootwyk.

He is survived by: his daughters, Yvonne Menninga (Stewart) of Keller and Linda Rhoads (Jeffrey) of Las Vegas, Nevada; his grandchildren, Chad Ford (Stacy) of Oskaloosa, Katie Goodyk (Bryan) of Keller, Erica Gershman (Michael) of Mooresville, NC and Nick Rhoads (Brena Huber) of Cedar Falls; his great grandchildren, Mason Ford, Morgan Ford, Kolten Goodyk, Paxton Goodyk, Trey Goodyk, Brandt Humphrey, Hudson Gershman, Ethen Roiland, Izabella Roiland, Keaton Rhoads, Landyn Rhoads, Emily Carriker and Ryan Carriker; his sister Virginia Gass; and his sister-in-law Joan Van Klootwyk.

Memorials may be given in Melvin's memory to the Columbia United Methodist Church.
