He was predeceased by: his father Claude Smith; his stepmother Vivian Smith; and his mother Wanda Vanderlinden (Higer). He is survived by: his wife Sue M. Kofka of Ida Grove, IA; his grandchild Ryan; his sons, Shawn Smith (Cynthia) of Hoschton, GA and Ryan Smith of Jefferson, GA; his grandsons, Justin Smith and Sammy Smith; and his siblings, Ernie Smith of Bronson, IA, Albert Smith (Susie) of Bronson, IA, Claudene Ruhrer of Sioux City, IA and Carol Taylor (Harold) of Lyons, NE.
