He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl William and Rose V. Walz (Elwood); his aunt Mabel Carr; his daughter-in-law Joy; and his brother-in-law Paul Madden.

He is survived by: his wife Carolyn Walz; his son John Walz Jr. (Stephanie Wheatley); his grandchildren, Morgan Babcock (Tommy), JP Walz and Wesley Walz; and his sister-in-law Patricia Madden-Gerding. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and other extended family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, John's family suggests memorials to the Estherville Lutheran Church, Joy of Life Foundation, Emmet County Humane Society, Humane Society of Northwest Iowa or ILCC Athletics.
