He was predeceased by: his brothers, Lloyd and Kenny Bates; and his parents-in-law, Lawrence and Leona Bakalyar. He is survived by: his wife Sharon of Britt; his sons, Lance Bates (Sharon) of Paullina, IA, Loren Bates (Julie) of Estherville and James Bates (Janice) of Sheridan, IN; his grandchildren, Travis, Lee (Amber), Rachel, Taylor and Jacquellyne; his great grandchildren, Tatum and Teagan; his siblings, Luella Williamson (Bob) of Spencer, Carol Sherman (Jerry) of Pella, Jim Bates (Shirley) of Graettinger and Harry Bates; and his siblings-in-law, Bonnie Bates of Marysville, MO, Aura Beth of Oklahoma and Ken Bakalyar (Ruth) of Alexandria, MN. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, there will not be a meal provided following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Garner Evangelical Free Church.
