He was predeceased by: his parents, John Charles Whitten and Anne Mae Deaton Whitten. He is survived by: his wife Sandra Hammerbacher Whitten; his son William H. Whitten, Jr.; his grandchildren, Misti Rogers, Tylor Nicholson, Deanna Burrell, Zachary Rogers and Russell Gibson; and his sister Deliah Pitts of South Carolina.
