He was predeceased by: his parents, James Louis Nelson, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Bolston Nelson; and his siblings, Anthony Antonio Nelson, Constance Maria Nelson and Gwendolyn Atlean Primas.

He is survived by: his friend Jacquelynn Waller Nelson; his children, James Matthew Nelson and Dr. Joycelynn Denise Nelson; and his sisters, Angela Elizabeth Hall, Denice Nelson and Pamela Denice Trawick. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, one God daughter, one God grandchild, and friends.
