He was predeceased by: his parents, Vernon Gibbs, Sr. and Margaret Catherine Green Humphreys (Hunter Thornton Humphreys); and his brother Vernon Lee Gibbs, Jr.. He is survived by: his wife Halena Withrow Gibbs of Ellijay, GA; his children, Angela Gibbs Reynolds (Chris Reynolds) of Braselton, GA, Matthew Teague (Whitney Teague) of Ellijay, GA and Holli Charlcee Gibbs of Ellijay, GA; his sister Phyllis Parrott (Tommy Parrott) of Ellijay, GA; and his grandchildren, Christopher Reynolds, Grey Reynolds, Chanse Cheek, Kace Teague, Blakelee Teague and Ensley Teague. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
