He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Campbell and Vivian Campbell; his parents-in-law, Willine Helms and William Helms; and his niece Meagan Campbell.

He is survived by: his wife Gail Campbell; his children, Caryn Campbell and K. C. Campbell; his daughter-in-law Ashley Campbell; his grandchildren, Aslan Campbell, Brady Campbell and Emerson Campbell; his brother Wayne Campbell; his sisters-in-law, Susan Campbell and Camilla Helms; his nephew Ryan Campbell; and his siblings-in-law, Robert Helms (Steve Williams) and Jane Helms.

Though he probably shouldn't have been, James was really surprised by his selection for the All Sports Association, "Al Byrne Award" for his contributions to recreation opportunities for the children and adults in Niceville and surrounding communities.
