He was predeceased by: his daughter Valerie Shumate; and his parents, Ira Shumate and Ora Mitchem Shumate. He is survived by: his wife Iona Shumate; his children, Robby Shumate (Kim) of Bryceville, Terri Boyd (Jimmy) of Callahan and DeDe Hilaman (Doug) of Bryceville; his grandchildren, Matt Boyd (Gayle), Brad Boyd (Jenny), Michelle Stewart (Dan), Stephanie Waddell (Jeff), Mark Shumate, Thomas Shumate, Kevin Hilaman and Max Hilaman; and his brother Melvin Shumate (Jane) of Salisbury, NC.. He is also survived by nine great grandchildren.
