Michael Joseph Ambrosecchio Obituary

Michael Joseph Ambrosecchio (Mike), 92, a longtime resident of Stamford passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 2, 2023. Michael was born on May 9, 1931, in Gloversville, New York, son of the late Antonio and Sarafina (Iacovone). As a young boy he moved with his family to the Bronx, where he grew up learning to work any job he could find to help his mother feed their large family. As a teen, he serenaded his Arthur Avenue neighborhood with a street-corner a capella group.

Mike was a consummate practical joker who enjoyed laughing at and with everyone, including himself. The ultimate family man, he was beloved as “Uncle Mikey”, “Grandpa”, “Poppy” and “Daddy”, and he took his role seriously, always teaching the next generation important life skills; how to garden, cook, paint, repair and drive a standard shift. He was blessed with unlimited capacity for joy, love and gratitude. These attributes stayed with him right to the end. Everyone who had the honor of knowing Mike loved him dearly and will always remember his big, infectious smile.

Mike served in the Air Force from 1951-1955. He loved planes, trains and automobiles. As a young father he shared the building and operating of model airplanes and trains with his children, nieces and nephews. He was always tinkering with cars and anything mechanical, taking pride in his ability to “fix anything”. Courses in Mechanical Drawing and Industrial Design, combined with his innate mechanical abilities put him on the road to a varied career history. He designed parts for Homelite chainsaws, and at Perkin-Elmer for the Hubble Space Telescope. His favorite job was auto mechanic. He worked 2 and sometimes 3 jobs simultaneously to support his family, and eventually retired from the Post Office.

Michael is survived by his loving daughters, Gail Lauridsen and her husband Peter of Cos Cob and Sandra Lane and her husband Kevin of Norwalk. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Michael, Thomas and Joseph Buchanan, Sarah and Christiana Lauridsen, and great-grandchildren, Bryce and Jillian Buchanan.
Besides his parents, Michael was also predeceased by Lucy, his wife of 67 years, daughter Renee Buchanan, sister Teresa Moffa; brothers Charles, Joseph, August, Emanuel and Mario.

Funeral will be held at St. Leo Church, 24 Roxbury Road, Stamford on August 9; visitation at 9:30 A.M., mass at 10:00 A.M. A procession will follow to St. Mary’s Mausoleum, Greenwich, CT where a committal service will be held.
