He is survived by: his wife Catherine Hessel (Duignan); his daughter-in-law Meghan Gorman Hessel; his daughter Gretchen Hessel; his grandchildren, Christopher, Cole, Caroline Hessel, Emily and Spenser Donaldson; his niece Martha Gardner (Bill); his nephew John E. Shaughnessey (Michelle); and his sister-in-law Patricia Hessel.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ray's memorial to St. Anthony of Padua Church, 149 South Pine Creek Rd., Fairfield, CT 06824.

“Dear Hessel Family, I have so many memories of Mr. Hessel throughout my childhood as our neighbor and close family friend. One great memory is of being on your boat when we got to try out the hand held motor run wave runner! It was way before its time! I have great memories of the Half Mile table at the St Patricks party. His great pants and always kind conversations and love of family. He always took the time to speak to me one on one. He was a very special caring man. Love, Patty Ann”
