He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Cindy; his stepsons, Alden and Merritt Perry; his children, Ogden, Sarah Dowcett and Colin Dowcett; his siblings, Chris Radel (Gregg) and Robert Dowcett (Connie); his niece Kristen Dowcett; his grandchildren, Winn, Sawyer, Octavia, Taryn, Rubin Hazel Dowcett, Gavin and Maia Perry; and also Kristina Perry. He was also cherished by married his first wife and raised three children.

For the last six years Jim served as president of the board of Asher Student Foundation centered in San Francisco where he helped manage millions of dollars to support educational housing needs throughout the country.

“I knew Jim Dowcett as colleague at Principia College, where I taught Russian, but more importantly I heard about him often from our mutual friend, the actor and mime, Richard Morse. In recent years, Jim was the one true friend Richard loved and trusted. Jim set up a website to honor Richard, and helped Richard find a suitable home after his wife's passing, With an inimitable twinkle in his eye, Jim had a boundless love for humanity. And I remember Colin's fabulous music, too!”
