He was predeceased by: his parents, Nina Wood Smith and John Alfred Smith; his brother Ted Smith; and his son Timothy Carlson Smith. He is survived by: his significant other Alan Savat; and his sister Mary Duba of St. Louis. He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews, and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
