He is survived by: his siblings, Geri Goodman of Dubuque, Loras Hanten (Pat) of Dubuque and Dan Hanten of Dubuque.

“I’m one of the pianists at Wine & Roses in Lodi, CA. Gene would come in regularly. We would often split a hamburger, and he would play during my breaks. Additionally, we would duet, trading sides for each song. What fun we had as this went on over a year! Nobody would ever know he was sick, unless he told them. Gene was a walking music encyclopedia, from standards to show tunes. He’d often remind us who wrote a song, what year, what movie, etc. More important, he was a gentleman & good friend.”
