He was predeceased by: his mother Mable Ounan; and his stepfather Thomas Ounan. He is survived by: his wife Carol Landgraf; his children, Randy Bender (LaDonna) of Spearfish, SD, Jay Bender (Adrienne McEntee), Guy Bender (Angie Bahr), Deani Riedesel (Tim Begeman) and Wentworth; his grandchildren, Alyssa (James), Kailah (Brian), Megan (Trevor), Myles (Sarah), Kyle (Natalie), Jenn (Craig), Bryn (Jon), Mason, Quinn and Myranda; his siblings, Barbara Fucci of Philadelphia, PA., Harry, Jerry, Bobby and Chrissy; his nephew Jerry Bender; and his great-nephew Joey Marlino.
The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Don and Carol Bender Scholarship at the SDSU Foundation in Brookings or Teen Challenge of the Dakotas in Brookings, SD.
