He was predeceased by: his parents, Donald B. Gates and Elizabeth A. Gates. He is survived by: his wife Kelly Gates; his children, Jayson Gates (Tabitha), Christopher Gates (Sarah), Candice Kimbell (Stoney) and Charice Gates; and his siblings, Robert Gates (Nancy), William Gates (Sherry), Philip Gates (Jan) and Donna Gates Cambon. He is also survived by six nieces and nephews.
