He was predeceased by: his parents, Archibald Varnold and Mary Ruth Andrews Stokes; and his brother William J. Stokes. He is survived by: his wife Nancy Ann Wright of Rogers, Arkansas.; his children, Traci Smith of Conway and Jerry "Jaybird" Stokes of Leonardtown, Maryland; and his sister Sue Tingley of Moline.
