Merle was predeceased by: husband Clifford W. Hoover; parents, Arthur Mitchell and Myrtle Mitchell; siblings, Reginald Mitchell (Essie), Loyal Mitchell, Arthur Mitchell (Nell), William Mitchell (Dorothy), Arnold Michell, Winfred Mitchell, Arlene Mitchell, Mary Ray (Brown), Gladys Beavers (Braxton), Nella Mitchell and Bernice Shaffer (Al); and brother-in-law Arthur May.

Merle is survived by: children, Karen Nichols (Ricky), Ralph Hoover and Michael Hoover (Shirley); siblings, Wesley Mitchell (Mary Ruth) and Hazel May; and grandchildren, Stephanie Crawley (Xavier), Mark Martinez Hoover, Jeff Jones (Christy), Paul Jones (Breand), Shawn Nichols (Andrea), Patrick Nichols (Krystal) and Summer Williams (Chris).
