He was predeceased by: his parents, Martha Elizabeth Ogletree Hays and Emmit Edward Hays; and his sisters, Diana Hays Tompkins and Pattie Hays Terry. He is survived by: his wife Kathy Nelson Hays; his daughter Mandy Hays-Askew; and his grandson Ethan Wesley Zane Askew. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
