He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert T. Bates and Lula E. Gossett Bates; his son Eddie Dwayne Bates; and his siblings, Amos Bates, H. T. Bates, Jr., Rayburn Bates, Robert Lee Bates, Lowell Edward Bates, Sybil Henderson, Inez Speegle, Dorothy Morrow and Audrey Sonenberg.
He is survived by: his wife Vonda Lambert Bates; his sons, Danny (LeeAnn Bates) and David Bates; his brother Leon (Mildred Bates); and his sisters-in-law, Glenda Bates and Doreen Bates. He is also survived by five grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.
