Amelia Lewandowski Obituary

Mrs. Amelia Lewandowski, aged 95 - and a half - years, beloved Mother, Baba, ChaCha and Sister, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Hospice surrounded by family. She was one of 11 children born to Anthony and Antonia Zakrewski, and was a life-long resident of Thunder Bay, spending most of her life on Winnipeg Avenue in the South End.

She married the love of her life, Walter Lewandowski, and raised two children, Roger and Wanda, of whom she was extremely proud. She also took great pride in providing to others through her cooking and gardening skills, and spent many years after her retirement making perogies and cabbage rolls at the Polish Hall on Simpson Street. Being part of a large extended family meant Amelia was always involved with her siblings, their families, as well as her own children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in one way or another, whether it was preparing meals for special occasions, putting her pineapple squares together for the annual July 1st picnic, or just spending time with her nieces and nephews.

She was especially close to Jo-Ann, Rene, Sandra, Gary, Cindy, Lynda and Judy, who were all so lovingly supportive of her in her later years. Amelia was a member of Knox United Church, as well as Royal Canadian Legion Polish Veterans’ Branch 149 where they put her perogy-pinching skills to the test. Predeceased by her husband Walter, her beloved daughter Wanda Wojciechowski, her brother Ted, and sisters Frances, Wanda, Regina, Vera, Anne, Mary, Cecilia and Elizabeth.

Amelia will be lovingly remembered by her son, Roger (Judith) of St. Catharines, and son-in-law, Joseph Wojciechowski, and grandchildren Julie (Eddie), Jamie (Michelle), John (Meagen), Stephen (Lisa), Cathy (Dave) and Gary (Michelle), as well as 14 great-grandchildren and dear sister Ethel Wiwcharyk. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends. A special note of appreciation goes out to Dr. Simpson from the Thunder Bay Regional Cancer Centre, and her community outreach team led by Lynda Roussel, whose compassion and devotion to Amelia made the past few months extremely comfortable for her.

Special thanks to Cathy and all the staff at Sister Leila Greco Apartments who do a remarkable job of supporting and enabling the residents to live the fullest and most productive lives possible. The family also appreciates all the support and care provided to Amelia and the family from St. Joseph’s Hospice during the past week. And finally the family is immeasurably grateful for all the wonderful grandchildren, nieces and nephews who gave her so much loving care over the years.

A celebration of her life is to be held on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Sargent & Son Funeral Home, 21 North Court Street, Thunder Bay. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorials in honour of Amelia to the Thunder Bay Regional Cancer Centre, or St. Joseph’s Hospice would be appreciated.
