He was predeceased by : his parents, Joseph Coates and Dora Coates. He is survived by : his son Ken (Jenny); his granddaughters, Courtney (Josh), Mary and Hannah; his great grandchildren, Jimmy, Artie, Sammy, Nora and Elaina; and his siblings, Allan Coates, Barbara Sleep and Beatrice Blukes.
