Mercedes Ann (Turner) De Gagné Obituary

Mercedes Ann De Gagné (Turner) passed away quietly at the Ottawa Hospital on October 8, 2022 at the age of 92. Beloved wife of the late Jean Marc De Gagné (June 18, 2008); dear mother of Bernard (Debra Childs), Pierre (Suzanne de Varennes), Guy (Lynne Brunette), Louis (Michelle Boan), Elaine (Robert Marchand) and Julie (Marc Lafontaine); cherished grand-mother of 22 grand-children and 10 great grand-children. Fondly remembered by her sisters: Jeannine (late Allie Chiasson), Beverley (late Jim Lamantia) and many nieces, nephews and friends. Predeceased by her parents Frank and Clara (Bruce) as well as her sisters, Shirley (late Paul Doucet) and Betty (late Paul O'Halloran) and her brother Bruce (late Louise Dowd).

Raised in New Waterford, Nova Scotia she completed her nursing certificate in Cape Breton, followed by an Obstetrics certification in Montreal. After reconnecting with Jean Marc, she took a chance and moved to Ottawa to work at the General Hospital. They were married in 1954 in New Waterford, NS and eventually settled in Elmvale Acres in 1959. Always loving, positive and supportive, she strove to ensure her children found happiness. She worked as a nurse for over 40 years, where she was admired and respected by her peers. Her smile, good humour and infectious laugh were much loved by patients and staff alike.

There will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be held at 11am on Saturday, October 15 2022, at Sainte-Geneviève church, 825 Canterbury Ave, Ottawa. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Diabetes Canada would be greatly appreciated.

Kathleen O'Halloran wrote a sympathy message

“Dear cousins, although you can’t see her, she will be with you always in all the many ways she shaped you into the people you are. The memories don’t fade, especially the many, many shared laughs, and in particular, the distinctive sound of HER laughter, which only made those moments better. It's comforting to know that she and her “honey” are together again. Those lovebirds.”
