He was predeceased by: his parents, Milton Hemphill and Martha Hemphill (Gotell); his wife Janet (Erikkson); his siblings, Ralph, Walter (Eileen), Junior (Agnes), Thelma "Timmie" MacNeill (Pellar), Eleanor Burke (Bernie) and Constance "Connie" Kent (Pat); his brothers-in-law, Mervin Tucker and Archie MacDonald; and his son-in-law Ricky Sutherland.
He is survived by: his daughter Ellen Fanning (Don); his granddaughters, Dr. Ashley Sutherland (Keigan More) and Amy Lockhart (Kenny); his great grandchildren, Ellen, Blake and Luka Lockhart; his sisters, Jean MacDonald, Audrey Melanson and Joyce Tucker; and his extended family, Ann, Fred Erickson, Brian Fanning (Marsha), Lee Fanning (Tara), Dennis Fanning (Elizabeth MacDougall) and Rory Fanning (Melanie Hill). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.
Donations in Elwin's name can be made to the Pictou Academy Educational Foundation with the intention of establishing a memorial bursary in his name.
